| The museum’s main function is to serve the public, so museum displays should be designed on the basis of visual psychology and behavioral characteristics of the visitors. As the visitors’visual perception guided by the light is extremely important for the design of the displays in museums, the design of light is not a simple lighting project; its main function is to serve the visiting audience. What impresses most domestic museum visitors at present is that the display lighting is generally monotonous, which easily causes the visitors to feel visual fatigue when they are visiting museums. Obviously it is not commensurate with the thriving development of the museums in our country. The number of museums in China has reached3020so far, however, the illumination design of the light environment of museum is still to be enhanced. We need to reflect on it. This thesis, based on the principles of lighting, visual psychology and behavioral psychology, focuses on the design of the display lighting in National Museum. Through intensive analysis of the light environment of display in the domestic and foreign advanced museums, and interviewing the visitors to the National Museum on the spot, this thesis tries to find a means of designing the light environment of display which is suitable for the museums in our country. This thesis is divided into six parts. The first section presents the research background and the key issues to be resolved, and discusses the practical significance and research method of this study. It also reviews the development of lighting in the National Museum of China, current studies and the theories concerning museums. Besides, this part also reviews the development of the lighting in the museums both at home and abroad on the basis of analyzing relevant historical materials. The second part presents an analysis of the light design of the display in the National Museum of China in reality. It presents a macro summary of the technical requirements of the design of display lighting, the types of display lighting and the ways to classify them. The third part investigates and analyzes the actual cases in the National Museum of China. It also summarizes the noticeable problems in the design of the light environment of the display in National museum of China through analyzing the data derived from the interviews with the visitors. The fourth part conducts a systematic research into the ways of designing display illumination with the National Museum of China as the object of study. It analyzes their influence on the display space, exhibits and visitors’behaviors based on the basic principles of illumination and visual psychology and behavior psychology theories. It finds the scientific ways of designing the light environment of display and constructs virtual and perceivable light environment of the museum displays. The fifth part concerns a case study of the “Chinese Ancient Coins Exhibition†in the National Museum of China. It analyzes the design of the display (including its light environment) of the original plan. It conducts survey of the successful designs of light environment in some museums at home and abroad, and obtains their ways of designing light environment of display and principles of regularity. This part also presents a new plan for the "Chinese Ancient Coins Exhibition" on the basis of the study of the design of the light environment. The sixth part presents some constructive suggestions and predicts the future of the design of display illumination in the museums of our country. |
