Many projects, especially the western region of the earth dam control project, itsengineering geological conditions is not conducive to a dam with strongly permeable gravellayers, which is one of the key issues restricting the construction and operation. How toscientificly and reasonably do well with a strongly permeable layer abutment of embankmentdams around the dam seepage analysis for the design of such earth-rock dam is of greatsignificance. An anti-regulating water storage project subject to Tingkou reservoir was ahomogeneous earth dam. It is planed to meet the water supply of industrial and domestic inXianyang when Tingkou reservoir flushing sediment. That is the predominant role ineconomy development of Xianyang. There is leakage around the dam due to its left abutmentcontaining a strongly permeable sand and gravel layer. Thus, numerical analysis wasapplicated to assess its leaking, which is helpful for water-impoundment and running. Inaddition, there is practical significance for developing the theory of the analysis of seepagearound the dam, and it can be worthful as references for the similar projects.(1) A study was conducted with different seepage controls, when consideringfluid-structure interaction or not. The result shows that the equipotential line in the dam andabutment cutoff wall upstream and downstream and the left bank of the slope toe is moreintensive, the sand osmotic gradient in the downstream toe increase greater, and the locationof spillpoint is higher, compared with unconsidered fluid-structure interaction, which isunfavorable to the stability of the dam. As as result, a fluid-structure interaction model wasapplied to assess to the safety of the project. And it exhibited that the cut-off wall abutmentlength should be at least50m.(2) An approximation with the horizontal permeability and vertical permeabilitycoefficient ratio was proposed to estimate the discharge. It can be seen that the contrasts ofdischarge was not significant compared with the finite element method mentioned above, indicating that this method is feasible. The model and the method used for the analysis of the characteristics of seepage around the dam have a certain theoretical reference value. Earth dam seepage around the dam safetyanalysis must take into account fluid-structure interaction; in order to fully grasp the safety ofthe works, it contains the stress and deformation analysis of the dam abutment and theevaluation of coordination and security between the dam and the abutment deformation; theapproximation presented in this paper can be used to estimate the seepage discharge ofdifferent cross-sections.
