A Study On The Civilian Spaces Of Contemporary Public Buildings In Beijing

Numerals big Chinese cities are developing rapidly. During this process, constructors arealways focus on the speed of constructing and buildings’ overstated facade, ignoring the basicdesign principle of public buildings, that is, shaping the publicity of public buildings. Underthis background, this paper will show research on several representative public buildings inBeijing to uncover the current situation that loads of public buildings are lack of publicity.Then, there will be a list of several concrete design tactics summarized from a great deal ofoutstanding cases.There are five parts in this paper. The first part is an introduction, which introduces theresearch background and the value of the research. Then there will be also showed thedefinition of “publicity” mentioned in this paper.The second part illustrates several relative problems. Firstly, the necessary of shapingpublic buildings’ publicity is proved from two aspects: from the view of the relationship ofindividual and city, and from the view of local law. Secondly, it is elaborated that publicity ofpublic buildings should be under a limitation, instead of totally open. At the last, two factorswhich could affect the publicity of public buildings will be introduced.The third part chose six representative public buildings in Beijing as targets of fieldresearch to evaluate and uncover the current situation, which is the present Beijing publicbuilding’s lack of publicity, from both quantity and nature views.After exposing problems of current public buildings lacking publicity, the forth part ofthe paper show reasons of the problems from three aspects: the citizens, the government andinvestors, and architects.The fifth part is the most important part of this paper, which listed tens of concretedesign tactics summarized from a great number of outstanding cases.This paper is wished to take inspiring to architects, asking them to shape publicity ofpublic buildings by using the listed tactics, and arouse architects’ attention to this problem,while it is also wished more people majored in Architecture could enlarge the tactic list.
