With the large-scale development in cities and the construction of gigantic complexes; with thechanges in people's living style and the relative lack of urban public space, architects must reviewthe relationship between the city and buildings. The concept of "urban public spases of buildings'provides an alternative not only to release the contradiction between architecture and city but alsoto promote their fusion. From the viewpoint of city plan, the concept put new needs of creative fordesigning buildings.The urban public spaces of buildings are spaces within (or owned by) buildings that overlappedwith urban public activities. Their architectural attributes embody in their functions, forms andproperty rights, while their urban attributes that are public and relatively independently completeare presented in the process of use. It is significant today to study the urban public spaces ofbuildings so as not only to offer reference to urban design and architecture design but alsoencourage marriage of our city and its architecture step by step.The paper falls into five parts. The first chapter illustrates the definition, attribute, meaning andresearch purpose of the urban pubic spaces of buildings. The second chapter approaches to urbanpublic spaces of buildings from the perspective of historical theory looking back to their history.addressing the influence of urban design theory and urban architectural theory, introducing relatedtheories and projects of several famous architects. All these indicate the universality andadvancement of the harmonious relationship between the city and its buildings. The third part andforth part approach urban public spaces of buildings themselves, that is the composition of thiskind of spaces. The third part deals with their various types of functional component parts. Theynot only have to meet the needs of building function but also to satisfy the need of the city .Theforth part deals with patterns their composition. They can be divided into three groups: one is toapply elements of urban public spaces (squares, streets etc) in building design; the second is totrea arehiteCtUraI eIements in a sPeCial wny that they can serv as urban space & the third is tomake uthan charaCtrs Permeate intO the buildingS. In the fifth chaPter, the design principles ofurban public sPgys of buildings are summarized and the domestic development conditions andprobIems of urban publics sPace of buildingS are stUdied by investigaing in Xi'an, Beijing,Nanjing, Shanghai etc.
