The construction of wharf requires very strict control of foundation settlement,especially in the areas whose foundation are soft clay, settlement control is one of the keysto guarantee the construction and operation of terminal security. The foundation that hasbeen treated by preloading method processed the foundation bearing capacity, smallersettlement, low cost, and thus are widely used in the soft clay foundation reinforcementworks. But the preloading method application at the wharf ground handling has some theorywhich is not yet mature, and many of the parameters is difficult to ascertain, so in theapplication of the law there will be a lot of uncertain outcome. In this paper some of theseinfluence factors will be more detailed study in order to guide the engineering application.Firstly, on the basis of previous studies, the paper introduced some basic theory ofconsolidation used by the preloading method; Then the paper introduces the design methodand process in the existing norms; After that the paper analysis a specific project examplewith monitoring data; finally using ABAQUS software to establish a plane strain finiteelement model. And analysis three cases as follows: only considering vertical seepage butdoes not consider the smear effects; only considering the smear effects without consideringthe vertical seepage; considering both smear effect and vertical seepage.In this paper, the main research results are as follows:When using preloading method to treat soft clay foundation there are various factorswhich will influence the result, so the site monitoring detection means essential. This paperintroduces the engineering geological conditions of a southern port’s soft foundationtreatment engineering, and introduces how to set the monitoring apparatus for detecting;After that it analysis the settlement, the water level and the testing data,and using hyperbolamethod analyszed the surface settlement. At last, through the establishment of three finiteelement model the paper draws the following conclusions: in the establishment ofpreloading finite element model, the vertical seepage should become a necessaryconsideration, otherwise the pore pressure and settlement will have a great difference with the monitoring and test data, and if we consider the smear effect, then the model and theactual situation will be more close to the true situation.
