The majority of our most destructive earthquakes have occurred in the weaker seismic-fortification areas of towns and villages. With the acceleration of urbanization process, a large number of RC frame structures have been used in the rural areas of high seismic intensity. In repeatedly earthquake disasters, the rural housing showed the characteristics as we called "frequent earthquakes would lead to disasters, and infrequent earthquakes would lead to awful ones", so it is imminent to study the earthquake failure mechanism and reinforcement methods on RC frame structures in rural areas. In this paper, the method of finite element numerical simulation is used to simulate the failure process of RC frame structures under destructive seismic actions, and in order to reduce the extent of failure, the reinforcement method of applying "Type A" embrace to the RC frame structures in rural areas is used. The main research work and results are as follows:(1) By investigating the main structure form of rural housing and analyzing its seismic failure characteristics, this paper draw the conclusion that under destructive seismic actions, the failure characteristic of RC frame structures in rural areas is called "the damage of column comes before beam".(2) By using ABAQUS—a finite element analysis software, the elastoplastic time history analysis method is applied to analyzing a single-span and two-tier RC frame structure under destructive seismic actions. The result of the simulation indicates that the failure mechanism of RC frame structures in rural areas is "the damage of column comes before beam".(3) In order to make a comparative analysis with solid elements, the trilinear of beam elements model is used to analyze RC frame structures with applying the elastoplastic time history analysis method. The result of analysis indicates the feasibility of modeling and analyzing with beam elements.(4) According to the failure mechanism, three types of embracing reinforcement methods are used to the reinforcement of RC frame structures. Through the analysis, the conclusion is that "Type A" embracing reinforcement method performs the better effect than the other two methods.(5) Beam elements are added to the method of elastoplastic time history analysis to simulate the earthquake response of a RC frame structure in rural areas before and after using the reinforcement method. The result of the analysis confirms the feasibility of using "Type A" embracing reinforcement method. And on the basis of simulation results, the "Type A" embracing reinforcement method which is suitable for RC frame structures in rural areas is proposed.
