The pile with expanded branches and plates has developed from commonconcrete bored pile according to the principle of bionics-copy roots of root structure.Where to set bearing plate of pile with expanded branches and plates is essentially aquestion of choosing right soil layer because the foundation soil is anisotropic,especially vertical characteristics of foundation soil is different. The pile withexpanded branches and plates is being widely used in all kinds of projects because ithas excellent characteristic such as high bearing capacity, little deformation onsettlement or up-pull and simple and rapid construction. Numerous studies show thatmore than50%of bearing capacity of pile with branches and plates (especially pilewith multi-plates) is carried by the branches and plates. The geological conditions inactual project is kaleidoscopic and very complex, when we use pile with multi-plate,the branches and plates might set in different soil layers with different soil physicalproperties. The different soil physical properties may have certain effect on thebearing capacity of each branches and plates, such as "time effect"(bearing capacityon each branches and plates is not synchronous),"aerial effect"[1]. At presentalthough domestic scholars mentioned these problems in the related literatures, butsystem research hasn’t been done yet. So what we have done in this article, the studyon effect of different soil layers, is significative.Based on plenty of data and literatures on pile with expanded branches andplates, we use large finite element analysis software ADINA to do analysis of thenumerical simulation on bearing characteristics of pile with expanded branches and plates in soil layers with different physical characters. Entity model is buildedaccording to the existing experimental data. Then we analyse the bearing characters ofbranches and plates in different soil layers, the load transmission law of pile withbranches and plates, the sphere of influence of stress around the plates and stressdistribution of the soil around the pile. And the reasonable evaluation method ofbearing capacity on pile with branches and plates is presented, the design basis onpiles with branches and plates is produced, all of these may provide helpful basis forfuture study and actual application.
