In the automation systems of distribution network, there exist a series of problemsbecause the system expansion or upgrade is very frequent. One is whether the new terminalequipment can be compatible with master station when the old feeder terminal equipmentrenews; another is when the grid expanses by use of the equipments of a third manufacturer,whether the equipment can communicate information with the products of othermanufacturers; the last but not the least is, when the system need to upgrade or expanse,the most advanced technology cannot be applied to power grid, because the originalmanufacturers are often chosen considering compatibility, which limits the development ofpower distribution automation.For solving above problem, based on IEC61850standard and “Plug and Play”(PnP)technology the research work is summarized as follows: First, PnP system of feederautomatic was built. The function the system was described and its framework was given;second, technical problem of realizing PnP in feeder automatic system and communicationprocess were analyzed; Third, automatic configuration process of terminal units was given.Furthermore, based on self-description of terminal units by SCL configuration language ofIEC61850standard, the design method of IED configurator was proposed. Finally, takingFTU for example, the functional decompositions of post FTU and cabinet FTU were done.Their communication information models were built. Besides, the logical nodes, logicaldevice and SCL description of FTU were given.Because the feeder terminal equipments of the power grid is great in both amount andvariety, when the equipment is switched on to the system or upgraded, the workload ofartificial configuration is big, so it’s easy to make a mistake. The realization of the "plugand play" in distribution terminal equipment will greatly reduce the artificial operation ofconfiguration and test when the terminal is switched on, and improves the efficiency andaccuracy of the whole power grid.
