The submarine cables play a very important role in the information construction. Thedamage of the submarine cables will causes enormous losses to people’s daily life andeconomic construction. Therefore, the safety of the submarine cables attracts more andmore attentions. However, there are seldom accurate and quantized researches on thedegree of submarine cable protection by rockfill against anchors. So based on the discreteelement method, the simulation to the mechanical characters of the rockfill under theeffects of dropped anchors and dragging anchors is done in this paper, which provides thebasis for the design of the rockfill. The main contents are included as follows:1. Based on the assumptions of the loads on the ships, this paper analyzes themooring system, and builds the mechanical differential equations using the formulation ofwind loads on the ships and current loads on ships and anchor chains. Furthermore, theloads acting on anchors in the different stages of anchoring are calculated by the finiteelement program written by MATLAB, and the rules of the development of horizontal andvertical loads in anchoring are analyzed.2. According to the discrete element software PFC3D, the spontaneous stackingmodel is built by the combination method of random placement and expanded radius. Inthis paper, the equivalent tetrahedron granular models and anchor models are built by themethod of atom and molecule to take account into the effect of non-sphere particles on theformation and development of force chains. Meanwhile, the mechanical characters of therockfill with three different friction factors and three different particle size distributionsunder dragging anchors are analyzed to understand the effects of different parameters.3. Based on the assumptions, the safety of the rockfill under different conditions ofdropped anchors and dragging anchors is checked, and the special mechanical charactersof the rockfill are analyzed in terms of force chains.
