Urban River Landscape Transformation

Urban river is an important part of the urban landscape, made up of naturallandscapes and cultural landscape, where the natural landscape is a prerequisite for theformation of urban river landscape value. In the1980’s, in the taking into account of theflood, we changed many urban rivers by concrete masonry, linear transformation, andsection uniform. After renovation, drainage capacity has been raised, but rivers lost theiroriginal nature. With the increasing popularity of the concept of ecological landscape,drainage of the river to restore the natural ecology has been got more attention.Tsinghua University River which is a section of Wanquan River, comes into westgate and go out of the north gate of Tsinghua. The river is an important school oflandscape corridors. Before the1960s, the river is plenty of fish in groups, andsurrounded by riparian trees. But as urban development, the river got polluted andcaused threat of flooding. In the1980s, Wanquan River got renovation, including thesewage interception, and the river concrete drainage transformation. After treatment,flood and pollution threats got control, but it lose the natural landscape. Today, moreand more problems exposes, such as sediment anti-smelly, poor quality of the landscape,the lack of river ecosystem, causing obstruction for the "Green University" campuslandscape beautification.In this thesis, through summar of theoretical research and practical experience in thethree aspects which includes of water management, ecological restoration, and theactivity promotion improved to renovate the river landscape at home and abroad,combined with the characteristics of the river of Tsinghua University, try to explore asustainable method for river landscape transformation, and hope this method is able toinspire the transformation of the study and practice of urban drainage river landscape.
