The study of plantlandscaping in this period hadn’t caught people’s attention because ofacademic disciplines and historical reasons. The study on plant scenerynowadays is largely absent from the combination of history, which makes it avacancy in the history of garden development. The research took the archives as the main material, using theoryanalysis, field research, and comparative analysis. It took parks of differenttime as study subjects, and the plant scenery as the main line. It reviewed thetransition of Shanghai parks in this special historical period, in order to revealthe level of plant landscaping, exploring the way of protection and utilizationof old parks, as well as providing important reference to the development ofShanghai gardens. The main conclusions are:①. Shanghai parksintegrating varieties of gardening patterns and characteristics, has greatly enriched its plant species and landscape types.②Shanghai Park had experienced the recovery, construction, adjustment and damage periods in30years from1949to1978, whichshowed the constraints of social system on landscape.③Plant landscaping of Shanghai park (1949-1978) emphasized that theshaping of landscape was a process rather than result, mainly in the use ofplant materials, such as the use of fast-growing trees and nursery seedlings, flowers as ornaments, as well as the space reserved for plant growth. Thepursuit for fast-shaping landscape and blind use of big trees, flowers inmodern landscape should have aroused our reflection.④Shanghai garden use plants as the major landscaping element, shaping the landscape through different mix of plants and ways. Such as:①The cases for study is not enough to reflect the overall situation of plantlandscaping in Shanghai park (1949-1978);②The study failed to comparethe development process of plant landscaping in other cities in nearly threedecades, which should be strengthened for further study in the future.
