With the social development, energy issues have become increasingly prominent, and the building energy consumption accounted for about half of the total energy consumption of humanity. Nowadays, architects give increasing emphasis on the construction of energy efficient design, in order to achieve the sustainable design of buildings. At the same time, architects are constantly exploring the regional energy-saving programs for different geographical and climate conditions.Building shade is a very important means of energy-saving. If properly designed, the effective distribution of natural light and solar radiation, can reduce the energy consumption of artificial lighting and air conditioning and achieve the purpose of energy saving. Building shade and architectural form of design is closely linked. Therefore, there is a lot of good architectural design on the shade according to the geographical and climate conditions, resulting in many beautiful and memorable architectural works. As the building shade study is with very wide range, this paper only selected east-west window shade design for the hot summer and cold winter region. Because of the climate characteristics of the hot summer and cold winter region, shading should meet not only solar radiation shelter in summer and solar radiation sufficiency in winter, but also the requirements of indoor lighting. According to the trajectory of the sun, the solar radiation received from east-west windows of building is direct sunlight with low solar elevation angle. So, many mature facilities suitable to the south window shade is not suitable for east-west one. Generally, the east-west window shade design for the hot summer and cold winter region is more complex, and causes a lot of restrictions for the architectural design.Currently, the most common means for east-west window shade is horizontal blinds. Besides, there are some constructions attempting to use the grille shade or combination with wing walls for the window shade. As lack of a more systematic study, it is not very clear how these ways for affect the interior lighting and solar radiation of the building, and if they are able to solve the complex issues facing the east-west window shade design for the hot summer and cold winter region. So, this study will make the analysis and try to find the solution. The Ecotect is a simulation software providing a platform for convenient analysis. With this software, this study can make data comparison and analysis to obtain the effects and characteristics of different ways of east-west window shade, and proposed some optimization strategy. Some of the results obtained in this study can provide choice and reference for to the architects in early stage of the architectural design. The research methods of this study can also facilitate an architect in the actual design process.
