The negative effects of global climate change and the waste of resources on human survival and social development is a major challenge for all countries. At present, many developed countries of the world take the construction industry as the key areas to react climate change, mainly through the development of green building which takes energy-saving and new-resourced measure to reduce energy consumption. Hangzhou belongs to hot summer and cold winter climate zone, intense sun radiation in summer leads to the low quality of indoor thermal comfort. the windows which are considered as the weakest part of the energy loss on the building envelope, while exterior shading can improve the energy efficiency of the building to a certain extent.In this paper, IES-VE is used to do researches on the office building’s exterior shading type and size, which mainly include the choice of the shade type in different directions according to the lowest overall energy consumption of the building. Meanwhile when a certain kind of shade is used, this paper makes a guideline about how to set the component size according to the four directions on the base of the lowest overall energy consumption of the building. The author hopes that it will be useful for building exterior shading design in hot summer and cold winter climate zone.First, the paper introduces the research background, purpose and significance, pointing out the necessity and importance of the research on building exterior shading design and optimization.Secondly, the paper introduces the shading status quo of domestic and foreign countries, including the traditional shading at home and abroad, modern type of shading, energy-saving trend, as well as many famous cases.Then, the establishment of a universal single room is made, IES-VE (energy consumption simulation software) is used, and different situations are simulated.Finally, the paper chooses a case of office building in Hangzhou, optimizes building exterior shading and takes the most appropriate ones in all directions. The analysis and the comparison are done according to heating and cooling energy consumption of air conditioning system before and after the optimization.
