With the development of high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials, HTSpower equipment gradually practical. HTS cable is most likely the first large-scaleapplication in power systems.HTS cable work at liquid nitrogen temperature range, and it have advantages ofsmall size, large capacity, low-loss and environmentally-friendly. Quench protection ofHTS cable is one of the key technology need to be addressed in the application.The quench of HTS cable can be classified as quench at local and quench of all. Theelectromagnetic properties during quench of HTS cable is determined by its structure andthe tape type which used on it. Quench protection of HTS cable means detect the quenchoccurrence on HTS cable and protection it, therefore, quench detection is the key toquench protection. The power system stability must be considered when protect the HTScable, for HTS cable operation in it. Therefore, the quench protection of HTS cable willbe studied at three aspects: study of quench characteristics, study of quench detection andstudy of protection coordination (that is, protection strategies).The follows are mainly contains of this paper:First, summary and analysis different structure type of HTS cable, summary thequench detection methods which have the possible to be used in HTS cable protect andanalysis the quench reasons of HTS cable. The study identified by this.Then, the quench propagation characteristics of HTS tape shave been analyzed bythe experiment and simulation, its influence to HTS cable have been discussed. Themodel of HTS cable’s electromagnetic structure has been established and optimized, onthis basis, the electrical quench detection methods of HTS cable are analyzed. It alsoestablished a temperature model about HTS in the condition of withstandingover-current.Finally, on the basis of above work, and consider the power system stability, a protection strategy which have different protect levels is presented in this paper. And itsimplementation also introduced.
