High temperature superconducting energy storage device (SMES) has wide developmentand application prospect in the power system. High temperature SMES has many advantagessuch as high efficiency, fast response speed, long service life, etc. The quench ofsuperconducting magnet will affect the normal operation of SMES, and even damage thedevice. So quench detection and protection is very necessary. Currently research onsuperconducting magnet quench detection and protection is mostly focus on DC charge anddischarge condition. However, the power exchange between SMES and power system is notjust base on DC condition; it makes the quench detection and protection more difficult.This paper designs a quench detection and protection system for SMES. Theeffectiveness of the system is verified by experiment. Main works in this dissertation are asfollows:(1) The main problems in the power system is summarized, and analyzes the applicationof SMES technology. Then research status of SMES device and quench protection isintroduced;(2) The basic principle of various methods is analyzed as well as their advantages anddisadvantages.Then the basic structure and operation conditions of SMES are introduced;(3) According to the operating conditions, suitable method for high temperaturesuperconducting SMES magnet quench detection and protection is put forward. This methodreduces the interference of electromagnetic noise, which is the key problem of the quenchdetection in the SMES;(4) The practical circuit of the quench detection and protection system is designed, andelaborates each function module of the system;(5) At the end of the paper, quench detection and protection system is verified by theexperiment. The experimental results indicate that the quench detection and protectionsystem can quickly and accurately detects the quench signal and protect the SMES magneteffectively.
