In recent years, the rapid development and excessive expansion of cities resulting inthe city underlying surface seriously artificilized leads to a wilderness of buildings insidecities especially in city centers, which has an adverse effect upon natural ventilation givingrise to the urban heat island effect since the accumulation of heat.Based on the above, this paper researches quantitatively into the relation betweennatural ventilation and external space form of urban blocks, using climate of Wuhan cityas the background through viewpoints of natural ventilation and introducing the citymorphology index. This research selects two indicator systems, the obstruction ratioproposed in the city residential thermal environment design standard, Rugosity andPorosity proposed by Adolphe, finds out the more suitable indicator system according tothe applicability in assessing the narural ventilation effect. It then analyses the simulationresults of ventilation in models of different styles of urban blocks through methods ofnumerical simulation and sensitivity analysis, discusses the relation of natural ventilation,Rugosity and Porosity, and finally puts forward the design strategies to improve naturalventilation of urban blocks. This paper further demonstrates the validity of the designstrategies combined with practical engineering cases.
