Environmental concerns and fuel cost uncertainties associated with the use ofconventional energy sources have resulted in rapid growth in the amount of renewableenergy sources. But it brings many challenges in grid’s reliability, power quality andscheduling plan by paralleling large-scaled intermittent energy in the grid, which restrictlarge-scaled intermittent energy to parallel in the grid. Energy storage systems can smooththe output of intermittent energy, cut the peak and valley, improve the paralleling capacityof intermittent energy, however Energy storage systems is too expensive at present, thus it’simportant to optimize its capacity. This paper put forward a method to calculate the adequacy index of grid containingwind farms and energy storage systems, and then uses this index to guide the optimizationof energy storage systems’ capacity. The main research contents are as follows:1. Put forward a method to calculate the adequacy index of conventional grid byMonte Carlo and DCOPF, and then test and verify this method on IEEE-RTS79reliabilitytesting system.2. Achieve the models of the climbing rates of conventional units, wind farms andenergy storage systems as well as their joint operation strategies by MATPOWER.3. Analyze the effect of the capacity of wind farms, energy storage systems onadequacy index and wind abandon expectation of grid in detail.4. Calculate the adequacy index, load cutting expectation and wind abandonexpectation of grid under different capacity of energy storage systems, and then optimize itscapacity.
