This research is focused on the interaction between ancient Chinese painting andclassical garden. Through the case study of thousands of ancient Chinesepaintings and nine Suzhou classical gardens, the research tries to answer threequestions:1. How did ancient Chinese painting and classical garden interact with eachother in history?2. What is the intrinsic logic of the interaction between them?3. How was the ancient Chinese scholars’ idea of the interaction expressed andpracticed in both of them?By answering these questions, the article draws conclusions as:1. In history,“Painting guiding garden” and “Garden guiding painting” weretwo kinds of interaction between ancient Chinese painting and classicalgarden, and the concept of “Painting guiding garden” profoundly affected thedesign of nine Suzhou gardens.2. In logic, Chinese classical garden can be interpreted as the representation ofancient Chinese painting and vice versa, and both of them can be understoodas the representation of ancient Chinese scholars’ ideas.3. In aesthetics, both ancient Chinese painting and classical garden present theidea “Juxtaposing contradiction” of ancient Chinese scholars.Based on research of the interaction between ancient Chinese painting andclassical garden, a critical perspective upon “object-driven” architecture and apositive inclination to “relationship-driven” architecture are finally proposed bythe author.
