Available transfer capability (ATC) plays an important role in thepower system congestion management, and is one of the essential indexesin electric market. On one hand, as a promising renewable energy source, wind power suffers from its fluctuations and uncertainties. On the otherhand, pump storage stations serves great in compensate the uncertaintiesbrought by wind power. As a result, the joint operation of wind farms andpump storage stations provides a promising solution. However, theignorance of the properties of the joint operation would lead to an overoptimistic ATC results, even threat the safety of the power system as awhole. As a result, in order to study the impacts brought by theintroduction of wind farms and pump storage stations to the system ATC,the need of proposing a proper joint operation scheme of wind farms andpump storage stations and the need of building an efficient ATC evaluationmodel immerge. Under a deregulated market environment, large scale andlong distance power transfer has become an essential role to keep thepower system economic and reliable. The thesis builds joint operation models of wind farms and pumpstorage stations, and on the basis of which, a novel hybrid particle swarmoptimization algorithm is introduced in the unit commitment optimizationevaluation of the joint operation model. And later, the spinning reservationlevel of the system is evaluated based on the reliability index of loss ofload probability. This thesis proposes a novel ATC calculation method, which evaluates multi-area ATC in a distributed way, to meet the trend ofwind power cross-area digestion. Compared with traditional ATC evaluation method, the new method consists of four steps: systemdecomposition, area equivalence, data exchange and topology checking, and could curb various problems when it comes to multi-area ATCevaluation. Finally, a thorough ATC evaluation is conducted with aregional planning network in China, where wind farms and pump storagestations are integrated. During the ATC evaluation process, a proper jointoperation of wind farms and pump storage stations is validated, andimpacts brought by the integration of large scale wind farms and pumpstorage stations are also explored in terms of the expectation and varianceof the ATC value.
