Pulley is a main transmission and drive component for belt conveyor. The pulley is usually subject to severe bending resulting in fatigue failure due to very high belt tensions and locking assembly pressures. Costly failures in large conveyor pulleys have led designers to seek detailed stress fatigue or endurance analysis. So it’s very important to study a reasonable approach for pulley stress analysis.This thesis studies a new pulley stress analysis method, that is, transferred matrix based on finite element (TMB). It is a semi-analytical method, which combines the strength of both classical stress analysis methods and finite element methods (FEM). With the analysis on the structure and forces of the pulley, the thesis obtained the distributing rule of the load on pulley. The unsymmetrical load, and which brings the stresses and displacements, on a pulley have been expressed in terms of Fourier series with respect to the circumferential angle because of the pulley’s axisymmetric geometry. Each Fourier component of the solutions have been determined by solving a set of corresponding governing differential equations, which have transformed the3D problem to2D problem. With used the allelomophic variables in symplectric elasticity, this thesis built the ordinary differential equation using the length coordinate as’time’, that is the ordinary differential equation built on the1D space field’s state variable vector in elasticity mechanics. With the research on the reformulation of transfer matrices, the thesis educed the TMB finite element stiffness for the pulley’s beam, end-disk plate with non-uniform thickness and cylindrical shell, and brought which together to form a global stiffness elements matrix for a pulley in essentially the same way as that in conventional FEM. Using the node displacements and transferred matrices, the thesis obtained the stress in any location of a pulley.The above process have been put into program, and a pulley stress analysis software program have been developed with Visual Basic6.0using this arithmetic, and the key technology have been well accomplished. There are convenient interface with user. The user just need to input the parameter of a pulley, and will obtain the result data and curve of the stress in the location want to calculate.The numerical example and result analysis have validated the correctness, convenient and practicability of this method.
