With the depletion of fossil fuels and deterioration of the ecological environment, as well as the decreasing cost of wind energy due to technology innovation and improved efficiency, wind power technologies have being deployed worldwide. However, comparing with large wind turbine technology, the research on small wind turbine technology has not received enough attention. Currently, many of the domestic small wind turbine manufacturers do not have appropriate resources, i.e. facilities and man power, to work on wind turbine dynamic loads and structure strength, which leads to domestic small wind turbines with high failure rate, low quality, which in turn have difficulty to retain international quality testing certification.Firstly,This thesis reviews-the state of the art small wind turbine technologies both in China and foreign countries, and the classification of small wind turbines. It also reviews the current state of load calculation of wind turbines, which leads to the aims and objectives of this thesis. After that, based on the theory of blade design, the aerodynamic shape data of the blade is complied with MATLAB software. The graphic user interface (GUI) also has been built using MATLAB software, which can improve the efficiency of the blade design. The three-dimensional CAD model of the blade is then developed using Solidworks software, followed by modal analysis. Then, this tehsis focuses on the dynamic load analysis and simulation of the10kW wind turbine using GH-Bladed software according to IEC standard. The simulation reveals the extreme loads of the wind turbine, which provides the load parameters for finite element analysis (FEA) of the wind turbine. Finally, this thesis analyses the strength of the nacelle of the10kW wind turbine using the FEA module of Solidworks software, which serves as strength verification of the design against the design requirements. This topic research provides clear ideas for blade design, load calculation and strength analysis of small wind turbines. Furthermore, the load calculation is according to the relevant standards of IEC, which can help small wind turbines to retain international quality testing certification.
