With China’s growing strength of transportation construction and engineeringcompany’s foreign projects is gradually increasing. However, the United Kingdomand its colonial countries or regions make British Standard BS5400as a highwaybridge design specifications. Therefore, the study researches the differences ofhighway bridge specifications between China and Britain is value. This article takesthe British Standard BS5400-2and Bs5400-4compare with the “General specificationfor highway bridge”(JTG D60-2004) and “reinforced concrete and pre-stressedconcrete highway bridge design specification”(JTG D62-2004). By the specificexamples illustrate the difference between the two countries. And the results of this study include mainly the following aspects:①Identify the two norms on steel, concrete material strength index ofconversion relationship.Studies have shown that the specification; UK specificationsteel strength level higher than the China standard.②Compare the two standard values of load and load effect combination ofrelevant regulation. The result showed that the British standard BS5400vechial loadvalues and the partial safty factor are larger than the China standard.③Analysis of the British Standard BS5400for beams subject to bending andshear, tortion shear bearing capacity of the relevant provision compare with Chinahighway bridge specifications. A numerical example of the two norms calculated bythe amount of reinforcement beams are compared.Comparision shows that rectangularcross-section flexural capacity is calculated consistent with the provisions of the twocountries. Torsional capacity of the two norms express different formula, butcalculated that were similar with ribs.④Compare the two specifications on the length of column axial compressionand eccentric compression of the relevant provisions, study shows that China’s axialcompression column specification formula for calculating bearing capacity safetymargin higher than the British Standard. In addition, the two specifications of therelevant provision on additional moment are basically the same.⑤Comparative study on the structural requirements of the two specifications ofthe relevant provisions. China’s minimum reinforcement ratio is greater than theBritish Standard specification. ⑥The calculation of the standard was produced by the difference between acomparative study and analysis of its reasons for the differences.Through this comparative study of the two specifications can be seen on therelevant provision of vehicle loads are quite different. For small and medium-spanbridges for vehicle load distribution are set out ways China can refer to BritishStandard specification.
