Under the context of globalization, food security and water security has become a hotspot of the world’s attention. The concept of virtual water proposed new ideas for research andsolutions to water security and food security issues. The "virtual water" break the inherentconcepts of people only for the physical water development and utilization, enrich theunderstanding of water resources, and expand the scope of water resources in the virtual waterto become a new water resources.This paper first introduces the concept of virtual water, blue water and green water,summarizes the theoretical approaches and research status; and comprehensively summarizesthe status and development of water resources and maize production in midwest of Jilinprovince. We analysis the time distribution characteristics of virtual water content of unitmass of maize and maize virtual water in different types of rainfall years, and study the spatialdistribution of content of unit mass of maize virtual water in different types of rainfallyears,through the Arcgis software, in midwest of Jilin province. Based on the division of cropblue virtual water and green virtual water, divide the blue virtual water and green virtual waterof maize in midwest of Jilin province, and analysis characteristics of spatial and temporaldistribution of blue and green virtual water content of unit mass, maize blue and green virtualwater in different types of rainfall years.Through calculation and analysis, this paper draws the following conclusions:First, content of unit mass of maize virtual water in different types of rainfall is differentin midwest of Jilin province. From high to low in the order:2001(dry year),2004(very dryyear),1998(wet years) and2008(flat year). Spatial distribution is characterized by:Gongzhuling city, Siping city and Lishu city is the lowest, Baicheng city is the highest.Second, maize virtual water in different types of rainfall years from high to low in theorder in the midwest of Jilin province:2004(dry year),2008(flat year),1998(wet years) and2001(very dry year). Midwest of Jilin Province precipitation pattern in the maize virtual waterspace distribution is constantly changing, and overall, Yushu county, Nong’an countyGongzhuling city, because of big maize area, maize virtual water is always at the highestlevel.Third, different precipitation pattern in the growth of maize need water, the proportion ofblue water is lower in wet years and flat year, and green water is higher, the blue water andgreen water differences is large. In dry year and very dry year, the proportion of blue water and green is relatively small difference.Fourth, the difference of spatial distribution of blue virtual water content of unit mass ofmaize in1998and2008are less, in2001and2004are bigger; and the difference of spatialdistribution of green virtual water content of unit mass of maize in1998is bigger, in2001,2004and2008are less. In different precipitation years maize blue virtual water spacedifference are bigger, and characteristics of the maize green virtual water spatial difference isconsistent with maize virtual water.
