Distribution system neutral grounding is a comprehensive technical problem, whichassociates with voltage level, network structure, relay protection and electromagneticcompatibility etc.Once in our country, ungrounded system and arc suppressing coil grounding system werewidely used. As the widespread of cables, some cities started utilize low resistance groundingmode to restrain the over voltage. It was reported that low resistance grounding mode had alower over voltage compared to arc suppressing grounding mode, but at the same timereflected the operating mode had a lot of problem. The choice of10kV distribution gridneutral grounding operation modes appear larger dispute, the controversial points mainlyfocused on the fault form of10kV network grounding, the apply area of arc suppressing coilgrounding mode and low resistance grounding mode, reliability of power supply, personsafety, communication interference and the work load of maintenance.In recent years, as the rapid development of commercial and industrial Foshan’s10kVdistribution network has undergone great change. The proportion of cable lines increased yearby year, capacitive current of system occur a significant increase, and the faults caused by arcgrounding and resonant grounding overvoltage happened occasionally. There’s a big problemfor urban distribution network neutral grounding.This paper described the overview of Foshan distribution network as well as its neutralgrounding modes, analyzed the advantage and disadvantage of the two used neutral groundingmodes in Foshan, investigated it’s problems in operation. The most widely used groundingmode in Foshan is arc suppressing coil grounding, so proceed a systematically theoreticalanalysis and numerical calculation for it. Finally, this paper proposed an optimization programfor the arc suppression coil grounding.By a practical optimization project, we verified that the proposed optimization arcsuppression coil neutral grounding scheme is reasonable. Through this research, we developedproposal for Foshan10kV distribution network’s renovation and construction, andaccumulated some engineering experience.
