The line loss of power grid is an important technical and economic indicator, which reflects the level of planning design, production technology and operation management synthetically. In this paper, the fundamental concept of line loss is analyzed and the measures used for loss reduction in power system are researched at first. It is elaborated in detail from the aspects of optimizing grid structure, adjusting operating voltage, regulating three-phase load and so on. Their influences on line loss are analyzed quantitatively by theoretical calculation. And then the grid structure optimization is mainly researched from network reconfiguration and newly increased substation. The changing conditions of line loss after optimization are calculated and analyzed.Network reconfiguration is an important method for grid structure optimization and line loss reduction, which changes the topology of network through operating the interconnection switch and section switch in power grid. In this paper, the mathematical model and object function are analyzed. The binary particle swarm optimization is improved by introducing the theory of breaking circle way and the idea of tabu search algorithm. Based on the theory of breaking circle way, the particles after each update could meet the requirement of radial network at100percent. The quality of particles and the calculation speed are improved. Meanwhile, after the introduction of tabu search idea, the calculation could jump out of local optimal solution and search the other areas in solution space when there has stagnation. So the global optimization ability is improved.Newly increased substation would affect the grid structure in power supply area directly and has great influence on the power grid line loss. In this paper, the changing conditions of regional power grid line loss after new substation increased. And then a planning analysis method is introduced for line loss after new substation increased. This method is based on the actual grid model and real-time data. It realizes the comparative analysis between line loss planning results and grid real-time data.
