With more and more vehicles gradually coming into the family, vehiclesownership in China is also growing, however, at the same time there are more frequentoccurrence of road traffic accidents. So the occupant safety performance for vehiclecrash is paid more and more attention by people. According to statistics, during2007the traffic accidents occurred in China, the side impact accident is anothertype of accidents causing death, besides the frontal crash accident. As most ofChina’s cities roads have cross-intersections, so side impact accidents have a highprobability of occurrence and the disability rate for side impact accident rank firstin road collision accident, while the death rate in side impact is slightly lessthan frontal crash types. Therefore, the side impact occupant safety has become oneof the key projects of the passive safety research. So, how to improve occupantprotection in side impact will be the thorny task that needs to be solved urgently.China began to implement the standard of "GB20071-2006: Vehicle Side ImpactOccupant Protection”, and at the same time launched the China New Car AssessmentProcedures (C-NCAP) in July1st2007, these regulations raise higher requirementsfor vehicle manufacturers to make more safety vehicles. This paper aims at theoptimization studies of side airbags, establishing one kind of optimization methodfor side impact occupant restraint system. During the research of side impactsafety, this paper expounded the basic theory and the theory of finite elementfor China’s vehicle side impact regulations and crash safety simulation. Theestablishment of the side impact occupant restraint system model is combined withthe multi-body dynamics analysis software MADYMO, using MADYMO PS substructuremethod. Due to Computer simulation, get the dummy injury index value, what’s more,analyzing and evaluating accord to the side regulations requirement. Based on theside vehicle body impact model, design a kind of thorax-abdominal side airbags,and analyze and process airbag parameter with the application of experimentaldesign, then get the composite indicator of occupant injury in side impact.Afterthe research, the results show that: in the side impact test and side pole test,after increasing side thorax-abdominal airbag, the deformation of dummy ribs decrease by10%to20%, viscosity index decrease by10%to20%, backplane force,T12force values and the MX fall by20-30%, the pubic resultant force peak is reducedby11%; and the presence or absence of airbags almost have no effect on peakabdominal force, but the abdominal force far below to the regulatory value. Thetheory and simulation results prove that increasing side airbag has a good effectfor occupant protection.
