Since entering21th century, drought has become one of most broad andsevere natural disasters, which occurs frequently in Kunming. Theshortage of water not only seriously affects the quality of life of localresident, and that causes environment geological problems forvulnerability of the karst physiognomy, in Kunming. The paper calculatedthe status of water resources of Kuming and analyzed the environmentalgeological problems arising from water shortage based on of the theoryof virtul water and Water footprint, and the paper also made forecastsof Water footprint variation in the next decade using the GM(1,1) of Greytheory.Over the past ten years, the total water resources of Kunming all tendto fluctuated decrease, its maximum appeared in2001was up to84.4×10~8m~3,and its minimum appeared in2009was38.6×10~8m~3.The production Waterfootprint showed an increasing trended year by year, from64.62×10~8m~3in2001to78.79×10~8m~3in2010. The water resources utilization rate wasmore than100percent since2003, even exceeding150percent in the yearof2006,2009, and2010, and the maximum is up to202.82percent.In the region of Kunming, the existence of the long-term and high waterresources utilization rate and over pumping phenomenon makes thedecreasing of supply to groundwater, and also led to a series ofenvironmental geological problems, such as groundwater depression, groundsubsidence, karst collapse, stony desertification and water degradation. On the basis of the composition of water footprint, the local governmentshould take a number of measures, such as developing water savingagriculture and animal husbandry, adjusting industrial structure, implementing the virtual water strategy and strengthening sustainableexploitation of karst groundwater, to solve the crisis of water shortage. This paper made forecasts of water footprint variation in the futhure using the GM(1,1) of Grey theory, according to the sample data of waterfootprint during20012010. The results showed the water resource demandof Kunming still had an increasing trend, which might further raise thepressure for the water supply. So it was urgently to accelerate relevantmeasures to prevent water shortage problems.
