Since the2008Beijing Olympic Games, the techniques of large-span spatial structures have been getting more mature with each passing day. A growing number of large-span spatial structures have been built and put into use, such as "Nest" and Water meter. These structures not only have a fine exterior but also have a large space, and they can accommodate tens of thousands people at the same time. These structures not only suffer from earthquakes, storms and other natural disasters, but also withstand the dynamic loads produced by thousands of people jumping up and down or moving in sync to the rhythm of the song played. Nonetheless, although aesthetically appealing form an architectural point of view, the long-span spatial structures are much lighter, with a low stiffness, and generally speaking, relatively low first natural frequencies and significant motion amplitudes. If these structures are caved, they can cause huge casualties and property losses. So how to monitor the long-span spatial structures and detect the structures damage in time becomes a urgent issue to be solve. Structure health monitoring system can real-time capture the parameters of the structural reaction, and through analyzing these parameters, we can determine the degree of structural damage and damage location.The roof structure of Dalian stadium is long-span spatial truss structure. To ensure safety of the roof structure in construction and the future service, the permanent structure health monitoring system is imported. This paper introduces the structural features of the Dalian stadium and the results of the finite element analysis. And the paper also explains the details of the permanent monitoring programme about the stress of cable and truss, as well as the dynamic monitoring of the structure and the monitoring method. And the paper also explains the hardware and function of the structural health monitoring system for Dalian stadium. The health monitoring system not only has the function of multiple physical quantity synchronization acquisition, but also can automatically store in different files and give an alarm to the controller when some abnormal situations happen. Through the health monitoring system, a large number of data are obtained. After the data analysis, we can evaluate the security of the structure and even give the location of the damage.Due to long-term test, it is found that the structural health monitoring system performes stable and reliable. And the structure health monitoring system also provides great reference value for other major projects.
