Heavy-haul railways bring greater shock loading to traction transformers, which demands higher requirements of traction supply equipment. Meanwhile, it is an inevitable trend to implement condition-based maintenance and reasonable life management of traction supply equipment in the current maintenance system, this life management system and maintenance requires in-depth study of the traction supply equipment insulation on-line monitoring techniques. In this paper, the characteristics of traction transformers is studied, the traction transformer insulation on-line monitoring technology based on oil gas analysis is developed and a case of Yuan pingnan substation project in ShuoHuang railway is studied.The ShuoHuang railway traction transformer has the following characteristics:as the ordinary electrified railways, the traction load has stochastic volatility, but with larger load and stronger impact. Since old transformer and new transformer are used mixed while the transport power is improving, which lead to the common of overload of transformers; Differ from the high-speed railway, the ShouHuang railway has large load, but it still use DC locomotive, which lead to worse nonlinear of the load; Differ from the Scott transformer used widely in Daqin railway, ShouHuang railway adopt the YNdl1traction transformers, so the imbalance of load in the windings reflects more obviously.The developed on-line monitoring system adopts high performance PTFE oil and gas separation membrance, which is with high-speed of breathable and short time of gas concertration balance in two sides of the membrance (less than24h), TTM-I adopts improved electrochemical sensors, which has the following advantages:the resolution of hydrogen can reach to luL/L, the response time is less than20ms, the eproducibility is perfect, the error of non-reproducibility is less than2%and its service life is longer than the general electrochemical sensor, which can be used normally more than4years. It can be used normally in the environment between-25℃and60℃. The data collection and system control circuit adopts the advanced CPLD and DSP technology, which can collect gas concentraction in oil effectively and control the system operation effectively. The using of CPLD technology makes strong expandable ability of the system. What’s more, the using of GSM wireless communication mode makes it convenient for the management.On-line monitoring system runs for many years in Yuan pingnan and other substations, which shows that the system is reliable with error less than3%. On-line monitoring system significantly reduces the work of preventive transformer experimental and protects the safety and reliability of ShuoHuang Railway power supply.
