In recent years, the gantry crane plays an increasingly important role in modern industrial process due to its high utilization of place and versatility. The weight of the bridge of gantry crane about60%of the whole weight of the gantry crane, therefore, how to reduce the weight of the gantry crane bridge attracts more and more people’s attention. In this paper, using the traditional design method and the finite element method optimized an L-shaped gantry crane for the purpose of light weighting. The other hand, the local stability of the gantry crane girder webs is an important indicator affecting the overall performance, this paper using the finite element method for buckling analysis of girder web under patch loading.Firstly, the paper analyzed the stress of the gantry crane that under different conditions according to the working characteristics based on the basic parameters of the gantry crane. Established the optimization model according to the structure of the gantry crane, and selected the section of each component as design variables, selected the weight lightest of the gantry crane the goal, selected the performance indicators of the structure as constraint conditions. With the optimization software platform of iSIGHT, integrated Matlab calculation program and using the multi-island genetic algorithm to optimizing the gantry crane, achieved the preferable optimizing results which satisfied the constraints. Secondly, compiled the optimization model by using the APDL, in order to improve the optimization efficiency, response surface method is applied to build the approximate model of finite element optimization model of gantry crane, and integrated optimization is applied with iSIGHT. Finally, compared the calculation results of traditional optimization design method and finite element optimization method, analyzed the characteristics and the advantages and disadvantages of different methods, and provided a reference for the optimized design of the gantry crane.Taking into account the impact of the local stability of girder webs on its overall performance, using the finite element method for buckling analysis of girder web under patch loading. Firstly, there are eigenvalue buckling analysis for the crane girder web, and a focus on the impacts of web thickness and flange thickness on girder webs critical load. Then, there are nonlinear buckling analysis for the crane girder web, obtained the load-displacement curves of different initial imperfections of girder webs. Finally, comprised the girder webs local stability critical load under patch loading of different calculation method.This paper provided a reference for traditional optimization design and finite element optimization design of gantry crane, and put forward the advantages and disadvantages of different optimization methods, had important theoretical value and engineering significance. This paper taken buckling analysis to girder webs of the gantry crane and identified important factors affect the local stability of the gantry crane girder webs under patch loading.
