Based on the research of risk management and project risk, it was explored thatthe risk management theory was applied to geotechnical engineering project ofHuaneng building, focusing on the research of technical risk assessment and controlaccording to geotechnical engineering design and construction in deep excavationof Huaneng building.In view of different professional characteristics for geotechnical engineering,with great security risk of design and construction, it was required that throughin-depth analysis of geotechnical engineering characteristics and involved riskcontrol factors, the basis could be provided for science-based risk managementdecision-making and risk control measures, after risk identification and riskassessment by combining risk theory with geotechnical engineering professionalknowledge.The geotechnical engineering professional characteristics and risk sourcecategories were analyzed in the paper, with the discussion about the necessity ofrisk management and the key of risk management for geotechnical engineeringprojects.Through a detailed analysis of technical condition in Huaneng buildinggeotechnical project the author participated in, risk analysis and risk managementprocess were described, focusing on the introduction of geotechnical engineeringevaluation of multiple risk factors and comprehensive technical risk analysismethods. On the basis of risk management practice of Huaneng building geotechnicalproject, the possibility of geotechnical engineering technology risk management andforeground were prospected.Through successful experience of technical risk evaluation and risk control ofHuaneng building geotechnical project, the paper showed:(1)As a special aspect of construction projects, geotechnical projects couldbe introduced into risk management. Looking from the current practice, theimplementation of risk management in the geotechnical projects was feasible, andpart of risk avoidance, risk mitigation and risk control problem could be solved.(2)Geotechnical engineering project risk assessment should be pay attention tothe application of geotechnical engineering professional knowledge, with technicalrisk analysis as the core, and the use of advanced numerical simulation technologyof quantitative risk calculation and assessment, the calculated results and riskcriteria by the study were compared, and a final size of the project risk was given.The risk assessment method combining consideration for various factors withprofessional software calculation, had a unique characteristics of geotechnicalengineering project risk assessment.(3)With the rapid development of the construction, and more and more large andcomplex geotechnical projects, risk was also growing, therefore, strengthening geotechnical projects risk management was of great significance to smoothimplementation of construction projects in China. Risk management, with furtherdevelopment and application in geotechnical projects practice which would becomeone of the important directions of further development of geotechnical engineering,could be used as a powerful tool for geotechnical projects construction process.
