Vehicular Ad hoc network (VANET) technology can enhance vehicle safety, and improve the traffic management in cities. So currently, many car manufacturers, communications equipment companies, and research institutions have been doing extensive research in this technology. And simulation tool is widely used in research process. But there is no one perfect VANET simulation tool right now and VANET is a special kind of mobile ad hoc network (MANET), so now people use network simulation tool which is mainly used in mobile ad hoc network (MANET) to study VANET.However, the latest research shows that the current mobile model used in the network simulators for MANET cannot reflect the real traffic environment, thereby obtaining experimental results those maybe not accurate and even produce wrong results! Added simulation has the advantages which is can’t be replaced by field experiments, so VANET urgently needs a suitable simulation platform for related experiments. Therefore, from around2006a few of VANET simulation platform have been proposed, while domestic research in this area is also less. The VANET simulation platform developed by this article is a preliminary attempt.VANET simulation platform faces four major challenges, including:(1) Driver and vehicle model.(2) Traffic flow model.(3) VANET application model.(4) VANET communication model. And the author also agree with the point of literature, large scale simulation is also the VANET simulation’s main challenge, the scale is a measurement of whether the platform is good.In this paper, a complete simulation platform for VANET named iVIS-SIM has been developed, which is able to complete the two way real-time dynamic traffic simulation tool VISSIM/SUMO and network simulation tool NS3’s connection, enable the driver and vehicle modeling, traffic flow modeling, application modeling, and communication modeling, can provide VANET environments to test VANET application and the initial design has been taking consideration of large-scale simulation, as described below, iVIS-SIM can complete large scale test of VANET application test. Finally, the platform is designed with a high level architecture (HLA) specification, increasing the flexibility of the platform.
