When a large number of towns and villages were re-regulated and planned, habitat environment and residential energy consumption of the rural region also have drawn more and more attention with the deep development of "New Construction of the Rural Areas" and " Resource-saving Society".Farmers no longer satisfied with the traditional mode of living, they desperately need a new residential model with beautiful environment and fully comfortable function. Scientific design basis and standard can be made only when accurate analysis and evaluation of the pressures and influences than rural houses put on the natural environment; and effective measures can be taken in the process of residential design, construction and working, so that we can control or reduce energy consumption of the rural houses, and meet the living comfort at the same time, and finally sustainable development of rural houses can be achieved. This paper that based on ecological footprint theory, is the analysis and research of low-carbon design and related strategies of northern China rural houses, from the perspective of sustainable development. The author had fully understood the problems of rural houses and specific needs of rural residents for the house. On the other hand, the author erect life cycle ecological footprint calculation model of building; and then we can calculate full life-cycle ecological footprint and ecological capacity of the exiting rural residential, map data analysis chart and quantitative analysis; and compared with urban residence, the main problems and reasons of rural house can be identified from all aspects.Since the reasons of problems in the rural houses has been analysed, the author can do some research on low-carbon strategies of the northern rural houses; passive strategies, energy-saving modular design, use of renewable energy and ecological building materials are discussed in this paper; on this basis, the author designed a multiple complementary rural house, which then tested and evaluated of residential comfort and energy consumption by Ecotect, and finally re-establish the ecological footprint calculation model to verify the sustainability of the house. This research method focuses on the ecological footprint theory which used to guide architectural design, and integrate strategies and ecological design elements from the view of full life cycle, in order to guide sustainable evaluation for green building design quantificationally. This paper is divided into six chapters:the first chapter is about the research background and significance, research object and content, and related domestic and foreign research status; the theory and calculation model of ecological footprint are detailed introduced in the second chapter; the third chapter is set up ecological footprint and quantitative analysis of the existing rural residential by use the ecological footprint theory; chapter IV are the study and concludes about low-carbon design of the northern rural houses; chapter V is low-carbon rural house design in the northern area and for validation; chapter VI is the conclusion, propose the focus of the paper and necessary of continual study.Departure from the sustainability assessment, low-carbon design theory and energy-saving strategies of northern rural houses, which were suited to China’s national conditions at this stage, are explored. I hope this topic will certainly help for energy-saving and sustainable research of future residential construction in the northern region.
