As everyone knows, the ship damaged stability is a very important aspect to guarantee personal safety, the safety of the ship transportation and the environmental protection. It is very important for the damaged ship to have enough probability of survival. With the large number of maritime accidents, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has carried out the revision to the present SOLAS convention. The new convention has been put into effect in January1,2009. In the new convention, dry cargo vessel and passenger ship damage stability are unified with the same probabilistic method. As the requirements for ship probability damage stability of the new convention has been greatly improved, this makes the ship meeting the old version of the convention may not meet the requirements of the new convention. The ship compartments designed before may not meet the new requirements. So based on subdivision of the new probability method optimization is necessary to study. Two kinds of ship are chosen to study on subdivision which should meet the probability damage stability rules of SOLAS2009, the results give some suggestions on the compartmentation of ship at the design stage. What is more, it can help to reduce blind subdivision and repetitive work. The main research contents of the paper are as follows:(1) Using the software Compass developed by China Classification Society as the calculation tools. As the hull line input and cabin in Compass software system is not intelligent, some twice development has been carried out in order to achieve the function modeling and modify the compartments rapidly;(2) Based on a barge, a large number of the subdivisions are created by certain rules. According to the SOLAS2009convention requirements, the damage stability calculation is done by using the Compass software system and secondary development program. And then advice about the length of tank and the width of side tank and the height of the double bottom are presented. Compared with the results in literature, the research method in this paper is reliable. During the process of calculation and analysis, the three supposed GM value are shown.(3) Based on a bulk carrier, a large form of the subdivisions are made by certain rules, such as the compartment length, the width of the side tank, double bottom height and so on. According to the SOLAS2009convention requirements, the damage stability calculation is done the same method as above. The attained subdivision index A has changed with the subdivision form and some suggestions of meeting the SOLAS2009probability damage stability of bulk carrier are proviedes. During the process of calculation and analysis, the effects of different trims to the damaged stability results are presented.
