Unlike the traditional seismic design method based onthebearingcapacityanddisplacement, the energy method can be used to take the cumulative plastic damage into account of structure caused by earthquake. It is a kind of relatively comprehensive seismic design method which has drawn widely attention.The following work was completed in this papper based on the principle of energybalance:(1) Structural energy equation is solved by the method of Newmark-beta and according to the obtained numerical results the structural energy response calculation program is written.(2) A four-layer reinforced concrete frame structure is designed in PKPM. Programs written in (1) is used to calculate structure total input energy, hysteretic energy and hysteretic energy dissipation than the layer distribution structure energy response is analyzed through structure total input energy, hysteretic energy and layer distribution ratio of hysteretic energy which has been calculated by the Program written in (1).(3) Considering the double impact caused by the maximum inelastic displacement and structural cumulative plasticity energy the interlayer structural damage index is calculated by using the Park-Ang damage model,than seismic performance.of the four-story reinforced concrete frame structure is quantitativly evaluated.(4) Based on the principle of Energy equivalence equivalent-single-degree-freedom system of the multi-degree freedom system is solved by using the modal decomposition method.Then simplified method for calculating structure energy response is study by Contrasting the energy response result of equivalent-single-degree-freedom system and the energy response result of the original system. The the following conclusions are obtained though the work above in this paper:(1) The Newmark-β numerical solution of Structure energy equation has good convergence, ca n obtain a stable energy response calculations.(2) During the earthquake response of the structure energy balance,damping energy and hyst-eretic energy are increasing over time and becoming stable in the Post-earthquake, structure kinetic and elastic deformation energy is equal to zero in end of the earthquake. Energy dissip-ation capacity of the structure is mainly reflected in the structure’s damping energy and hyste-retic energy.structural properties of kinetic and elastic displacement is zero at the end time of the earthquake, hysteretic energy of the structure goes small great in trapezoidal distribution.(3) Based on the idea of energy balance through structural hysteretic energy and its layer distri-bution an effectivly qualitative assessment can be made on the seismic performance of the str-ucture; an effectivly quantitative assessmen can be made on the seismic performance of the st-ructure by calculating the inter-layer frame structure damage index.(4) A simplified result of structure energy response with high accuracy can be obtained by takeing SRSS combination from the first two bands results of energy response of the equivalen-single-degree-freedom system.
