In the early stage of the Chinese Economic Reform, the local government of the coastal areas expropriated land from farmers in a massive scale in order to boost the economic development. The famers who lost their land had to build slums which were totally disorganized around the cities. As the cities expanded, those slum communities were gradually surrounded by modern buildings. Steadily, a special group of buildings which is usually referred to as the "Urban village" was formed in the midst of urbanized areas.More and more people choose to live in big cities in the process of urbanization. Therefore the issue of improving urban environment is becoming increasingly important. It is a common demand for the city dwellers to live in a beautiful and convenient community which is well organized. Two factors contribute to the chaos and disorganization of "Urban Villages". Firstly, the fanners who just lost their land had not enough resources to build the "Village" properly. Secondly, the local government was usually lack of a sense of long-term planning at the early stage of urbanization. The "Urban village" has huge potential safety hazards and many other problems, which would hinder the further development of modern cities. Thus it is a critical issue to reconstruct the "Urban Village" in China to improve the overall image of our cities. The "Urban Village" is a common phenomenon in many countries which have experienced the process of urbanization. Hence we can learn many valuable lessons from other countries.I am inspired by the idea of "Symbiosis". Symbiosis was a biology concept which means "the living together of unlike organisms". The famous Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa introduced this idea into the realm of architecture. In the domain of architecture, Symbiosis means different cultural factors could coexist harmoniously together, and at the same time retain their unique characteristics, meeting the demands from different social groups in a city. This essay will analyze the advantage and drawbacks of the "Urban Village" reconstruction, by examining the case of the Shekou Yuer Village. Moreover, we will discuss how people can apply the concept of "Symbiosis" into the modern city’s redevelopment.Briefly, the "Urban Village" should be reconstructed in a way that it can become an integral part of a city. At the same time, we should meet the demands of the inhabitants who live in those "Urban Villages". As a result, we would achieve symbiosis between the "Urban Villages" and the modern part of a city.
