Vacuum-surcharge preloading is an effective method to improve soft layer, this me-thods was extensively used to treat soft clay layer project. At the ground surface, inwardlateral displacement induced by vacuum-surcharge may cause tension cracks around theperiphery of area with vacuum-surcharge pressure applied. Those tension cracks will in-fluence the stability of the structures around the treat area. At present, insufficient re-search on lateral deformation characteristics induced by vacuum-surcharge pressure pro-vide deficient evidence for design reinforcement measures protect the surrounding struc-tures, which needs further research.The lateral deformation characteristics of soil induced by vacuum preloading con-solidation, surcharge preloading consolidation were discussed in detail, and on thesebases studied the lateral deformation characteristics of soil subjected to vacuum andsurcharge pressure. Developed a set of vacuum-surcharge preloading consolidation in-strument. Experimental researches on lateral deformation characteristics of soil sub-jected to vacuum and surcharge pressure were conducted. The main study and results ofthe paper are as follows:(1) Built a soil element deformation model induced by vacuum-surcharge preloading,base on the analysis of the deformation characteristics of the soil element approximatemethods were proposed for calculating the inward lateral displacement, the depth of thetension cracks and depth of none lateral strain.(2)Developed a set of vacuum-surcharge preloading consolidation apparatus and ap-plied for national invention patent. This apparatus can conduct research on consolidationcharacteristics of soils under different degrees of vacuum pressure and surcharge pressure.(3) Two series of experimental tests which had different degrees of vacuum pressureand surcharge pressure were conducted by the vacuum-surcharge preloading consolida- tion apparatus. Data of two series of experimental tests were analytical investigated.Analysis the lateral deformation profile of soil under different degrees of vacuum pressureand surcharge pressure; deduced that the degrees of vacuum pressure and surcharge pres-sure determined the pattern of the lateral deformation of soils under vacuum-surchargepreloading.
