City buses are mainly installed with manual transmissions in China, the bus drivers work heavily by using manual shift. So it has important significance to study how to update manual shift into automatic shift.This paper mainly discusses the bus’s semi-automatic transmission control strategy and CAN bus applied to the automatic transmission. Bus’s semi-automatic shift system is build basing on EPS system. The EPS system is used to reduce workload of bus drivers. But the original system has many disadvantages. For example, wire harnesses are too many and reliability is not so good. The EPS system transformed by CAN bus is able to overcome these shortcomings.This article will briefly introduce the function of each module of the EPS system, and then detail how to enhance the original EPS system by using CAN bus, including actuators, sensors, the hardware and software design of control system, finally introduce the bus’s semi-automatic shift strategy. Semi-automatic shift can be considered achieving some functions of automatic shifting, so it is necessary to introduce the principle of automatic shift first. Then it will detail the strategy of bus’s semi-automatic shift based on using speed as the control parameters.
