The Research Of Steel’s Representation In Landscape Architecture

Humans have known materials, which have played a significant role in the evolution of human beings, for ages. In old days, people used original materials, such as brick, wood, stone. And now, they use many high-tech materials. Materials are closely related to human life and are affecting the development of human beings. With the development of society, the use of materials in landscape design is not only supposed to meet the basic functional requirements, but also higher spiritual pursuits. Nowadays, designers are paying more attention to the artistic quality and technical performance of the material. The author has some investigations in a large number of instances in landscape design both at home and abroad.The thesis aims to do a research in the application of steel, which is a commonly used metal material in modern society, to landscape design. Steel is much less used in landscape design comparing with brick, wood, stone, which are traditional materials with a long history. However, steel still deeply attracts people with its unique charm. The author tries to figure out how designers express different intentions with a different method when they are face with the same material-steel. Firstly, the author will study the use of steel in landscape architecture history as well as some basic characteristics of steel. Then the author will summarize the material properties of steel and steel varieties which are commonly used in landscape architecture. Secondly, the author will analyze the application of steel in landscape from the following three aspects in detail:artistic expression, technical performance and the combination of other materials. Lastly, the author will summarize the design methods and specific application of steel to landscape design. After deep investigations, the author tries to provide a reference for future landscape design practice since this research bear some strong practical significance.
