Among the growing number of industrial heritage and landscape recovering cases in China,Shougang Recovering presents outstanding design research value. At present, the Shougang-related researches mostly focus on the continuity and reuse of the “material space” level. The existing researches are relatively insufficient in cultural and conceptual researches on site-related people, objects and events now and before,as well as how they were selectively removed, and how the stakeholders view this process.Acco rdingly,it is definitely urgent to fill the historical vacancy of Shougang’s industrial landscape at the level of “text and image”.This research focuses on the core issues related to “sorting history and regaining culture” and “representing history and focusing on the site”,and explores the historical role of the industrial landscape in the current Shougang Renaissance from a multidisciplinary perspective.First of all, based on the literature, research and interviews, this research explores the unique c ultural connotations of Shougang’s industrial landscapes in different industrialization periods, and compares them with the industrial landscapes of the United Kingdom, the United States, the Soviet Union and other countries at the same period, and explores their unique historical and cultural values.Second, citing the concept of“historical base” and relying on specific practical cases, this research proposes a landscape design approach to represent the history of Shougang ’s industrial landscape. The research of Shougang’s industrial landscape in the historical and geographical dimensions is of great academic value for understanding the historical thickness of the site, the locality of the design, and the perception of the place.Specifically,first,100-year history of Shougang’s full industrialization is traced back on both spatial pattern and practical concept levels, dividing it into six periods covering pre-industrialization,industrialization(initial,developing,and mature)and de-industrialization(exploration and practice). This research focuses on exploring the history of the development and change of its industrial landscape after the founding of New China in 1949.Using “machine and garden”as the core metaphors of historical narratives, the rel ationship between the steel mill and the environment is summarized into three stages: “containment”,“combination” and “integration”.Meanwhile, the historical characteristics of Shougang’s industrial landscape are explored from “material scarcity” to “space scarcity”,and then to “conceptual scarcity”,profiling the historical sketches of Shougang’s industrial landscapes and corresponding spatial pattern pedigrees in each period.Second, the history and its reproduction method of industrial landscapes are reviewed in a global context, leading to the concept of “historical base”,which is used as a theory and method to study the post-Shougang industrial landscape represented by the site and remains, and to summarize two historical characteristics as “fragmentation of large machines ” and “ multi-layering of technologies and humanity” in the post-Shougang industrial landscape.Numerous practice cases of Shougang North Area as specific design res earch objects, textual images and material space as the specific media for historical reproduction, three venue design approaches to reappear history are proposed as“narration of spaces”,“repetition of fragments” and “intertextuality of context”.Finally, based on “poetic metaphor and cultural imagination ”,possible ways of reproducing history are openly discussed. In the process of Shougang’s transformation from “factory” to “garden”,both history and reappearance in its industrial landscape are exerted simultaneously. The ultimate goal is to meet the needs of contemporary basic functions while creating a post-industrial place for viewers wandering, contemplating and stimulating imagination.
