Reverse engineering technology is an important method for new product development. The product design based on reverse engineering is to obtain the point cloud data of existing models by data measurement, and then rebuild CAD model on the basis of point cloud data in order to re-design, rapid manufacturing, and other follow-up application. Reverse engineering technology is an effective means to digest and absorb the knowledge of existing products’ design, manufacture and management; it can effectively shorten the development cycle and improve the success rates of new products by innovative design on the basis of existing products, so that enterprises can occupy a favorable position in the fierce market competition. The existing reverse engineering technology, however, in the practical application still exist some problems, such as, the CAD model reconstruction process time-consuming, the data acquisition time-consuming or lack of precision, the process of integration with rapid prototyping technology very complex.TRIZ theory is called Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, which is an effective technological innovation method. TRIZ is a set of inventive problem solving methodology, proposed by Genrich S. Altshuller and his leadership researchers in former Soviet extracted from2.5million patents around the world. In the decades after the advent of the theory, mainly used in solve the engineering and technical problems. TRIZ can effectively help technicians break the mindset, to analyze the problem from a different angle. TRIZ with the features of universality, practicality and operability, can help the technicians to solve the encountered difficulties effectively and find innovative solutions.This paper aim at the problems and contradictions in the practical application of reverse engineering, analyze using TRIZ theory and then propose specific solutions, finally, verify the program making use of instance. Based on TRIZ, this paper analyze three specific issues:1) for the problems of model reconstruction in reverse design process, analyze by nine screen method, solve the problems in super-system (positive CAD system);2) for the problems in the integration process of reverse engineering and rapid prototyping technology, a pair of technical contradiction summed, and then find the corresponding innovative principles by contradiction matrix, according to the tips of this innovative principles arrive at a specific solution;3) for the problems in the data acquisition process of reverse engineering, by combining technical contradictive solution method and actual situation of the problems arrive at a specific solution. Finally, we use the instance to validate the obtained solution.
