Heavy haul transportation represents advanced productivity in the field of railway freight, and railway transport capacity gets improved by the technology innovation and development of heavy haul transportation, which enhances the competitiveness of railway in the transportation market. Railway technical equipment is the basis for the development of heavy haul transportation. High-power, heavy-haul locomotives become trend of heavy traction power development.However, the enhanced wheel/rail interaction and increased contact stress worsened by heavy axle load destroy railway structure and intensify line deformation, causing track components damage and track line deterioration. Therefore, wheel/rail interaction needs reducing while increasing axle load. Research should focus on the improvement of bogie structure.Based on a33t axle load AC drive electric locomotive being designed at home, the heavy haul freight locomotive model is built with parameters provided by a vehicle factory. The characteristics of large axle load locomotive wheel/rail force are analyzed so as to provide references for the design of33t axle load locomotive.Firstly, the paper summarizes the design principles of heavy haul locomotive, two design schemes of the locomotive model are built. In total, the suspension structure of model1composes by hard primary suspension and soft second primary, which is opposite to model2. The differences of dynamic performance between two models are compared.Secondly, the influence of body structure and suspension parameters on33t large axle load locomotive wheel/rail dynamics is analyzed in order to optimize the dynamic performance.Finally, the calculating methods of wheel/rail contact stress get summarized, the results of33t axle load locomotive are gived separately by theoretical and by simulation. Meanwhile, some measures to reduce wheel/rail contact stress are raised after analysis of wheel/rail parameters’impact on contact stress.Under the background of high-speed passenger and heavy haul freight, China should firmly size this opportunity to enhance our overloaded transport capacity by improving technical equipment, researching new rolling stock and exploring mode of transport organization. The successful study of33t axle load locomotive will undoubtedly promote further development of heavy haul transport.
