With the development of science and technology, the structure of our power system is now more complex and the scale is much larger. Therefore, it is more possible to suffer faults. It is significant to ensure the security and reliability of our power system. Nowadays, the reliability of the protection and control systems has close ties with the security operation of power system. Specially the incorrect action of the protection and control systems cannot only expend the fault area, but also lead to cascading failures, which may cause the outage of the whole system. So, it is very important to improve the reliability of protection and control systems.Firstly, this dissertation introduces the research about the reliability of the protection and control systems. It describes the basic conceptions and common indexes of power system reliability and introduces the algorithms of the reliability of power system. Then the reliability evaluation of the protection has been analyzed based on the hardware modules. The concludes the common evaluation methods of protection and raises their disadvantages. Two reliability indices, component availability and system availability, are illustrated. Reliability model of protection and control systems is created by a system effectiveness approach including hardware module, interface module, functional module and effective module. Typical functional events are demonstrated based on the effectiveness on the primary systems. And series-parallel method is used to quantitatively evaluating the reliability of protection and control systems. Components importance analysis is demonstrated in order to find the weak points and improve the reliability of the whole systems. The effect of the secondary systems failure probabilities on the primary system has been analyzed. Propose the effect module, which can model the whole operation sequences of functional events of the secondary systems. Then analyze the effect on the reliability of an automated transmission and distribution system. This approach creates the linkage between component reliability, system reliability of secondary systems and the reliability of the primary system, which can be further applied in the reliability evaluation of the primary system.
