Based on the collected1999-2008forest fires data of in Panzhihua, combined with the terrain data and humanistic data, using the geographic information system principle and method, the forest fire characteristics and spatial and temporal distribution in Panzhihua were researched. using overlay analysis, buffer analysis and AHP method, forest fires impact factors were studied and their weight were divided. Then, forest fire risk zone mapping of Panzhihua was implemented according to each weight of the impact factors, with the application of ArcGIS Spatial modeling methods. The main conclusions are:(1) The condition of forest fires in Panzhihua is relatively severe in Sichuan Province, with a strong consistency between the number of forest fires and the areas. The number of forest fires and forest area of the victims have obvious inter-annual fluctuations in frequency, in the period of about1to2years. Panzhihua’s general inter-month variability of the forest fires keep the same pace with the forest fire warning period, mainly in the five months from February to June, of which March and April the most.(2) The number of general forest fires in Panzhihua City was anti of "U" from north to south. first increased and then decreased, where the basic linearly rising trend from East to West. The number of general forest fires has a certain positive correlation in the space. There was certain relevance between the forest fire occurrence and spatial location, as the forest fires in the northwest of the city are more serious.(3) Different factors have different influences on the general forest fires in Panzhihua City. The human factor was the main factor of the general forest fires in the city, with the total weight of0.5987, and the total weight of natural factors, the secondary factor of the general forest fires, was0.4013.(4) Judging from the results of forest fire risk zone, the forest fire prevention situation in Panzhihua City is grim, in which the middle and high forest fire risk areas accounted for more than53%of the total area. The forest fire danger rated higher in the north and south of the city, in which high fire risk areas are mainly located in the northern region, and the extreme high fire risk areas spread sporadically within the high fire risk areas.Based on the research results, the forest fire prevention work in Panzhihua City can be mainly relied on strengthening the forest fire prevention publicity, raising the population quality and awareness of forest fire, and taking forest fire resource allocation to different areas of Panzhihua City in accordance with the forest fire danger rating, increasing investments in human and material resources in the high fire risk areas and extreme high areas to reduce forest fire hazard to the limit.
