Haloxylon ammodendron is an important desert shurb with excellent drought resistance. Many researches have been indicated that sodium, as a osmotic regulator, could improve desert plants growth and drought resistance. Additionaly, Na compound fertilizer, not only improving growth but also drought tolerance, was suceessfully developed by our laboratory. Using the completely randomized experiment, the effects of sodium compound fertilizer on growth and drought tolerance of seedling and transplant H. ammodendron in Alxa, were investigated based on above works. The main results were as following:1.The research about sodium compound fertilizer improving strong drought tolerance and growth of Haloxylon ammodendron:Compared with control, Na compound fertilizer increased population density by6.8times, plant height by56%, crown diameter by49%, main root length by72%, dry weight by2.9times, branch Na+content by22%. Additionaly, irrigation frequency of Na treatment decaeased one time, fertilizer costs decaeased40%, plant height, crown diameter, main root length, dry weight of Na treatment under drought conditions increased by24%,111%,45%,89%, and branch Na+concentration increased by22%compared with local seedling field H. ammodendron.2.The application of sodium compound fertilizer for afforestation with Haloxylon ammodendron:Compared with NP fertilizer, Na compound fertilizer increased survival percentage by59%, total plant height increment by15%,, total crown diameter increment by60%, total main stem diameter increment by20%, main root diameter increment by14%, main root length by24%, branches quantities by33%, dry weight by90%.Irrigation frequency of Na treatment decaeased one time, plant height increment increased by52%, crown diameter increased by1.3times, dry weight increased by1.8times, main stem diamaeter increased by27%, root diameter increased by57%, root length increased by25%comparing Na compound fertilizer with local afforestation H. ammodendron. Above interesting findings suggested that Na compound fertilizer not only improved drought tolerance of H. ammodendron, increased survival percentage but decreased water, N and P fertilizer consumption.
