The study started from the application status of Acer palmatum in Hangzhou, and it choosed Acerpalmatum, A. palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ and A. palmatum ‘Dissectum’ as the test sampleplant.Through the changes of the three plants’ leaf color in pigment and leaf color parameters, as well asthe study of shade tolerance physiology in summer and leaf color parameters with A. palmatum‘Atropurpureum’, the leaf color change law of A. palmatum and varieties related could besummaried. The application of A. palmatum in Hangzhou’s representative attractions also was explored, with analysis on ornamental characteristics, landscape composition method, plant configuration andlandscape role of A. palmatum, providing a reference for the better application of A. palmatum. Throughthe study, the results were as follows:1. From spring to summer, chlorophyl occupied a larger proportion in the leaf pigment of A.palmatum leaf, the contents of anthocyanin relatively low, and leaves turned green from shallow to deep.As autumn comed, the contents of anthocyanin rapidly ascended and occupied a larger proportion, leaves turned red, with the value of leaf color parameter a*ascending. There was a flush on A.palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ leaf in spring and autumn. Anthocyanin occupied a larger proportion, and the value of a*greater, ornamental value also higher. When the leaves turned green in summer, chlorophyl occupied a larger proportion in the leaf pigment of A. palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’, withthe value of a*negative, and no obvious change rule of the L*and b*value. For A. palmatum‘Dissectum’, the relationship between the value of a*and the amount of the pigment content wasnon-significant, while L*and b*have a neat relationship with the content of chlorophyl and carotenoids, especially the value of b*and chlorophyl varied like that, as one down, another up.From the observations, various indicators between the upper leaves and lower leaves of Acerpalmatum, A. palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’and A. palmatum ‘Dissectum’reached a significant level, middle leaves basicly between the two. In the leaf color variation process of A. palmatum and A.palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’, the content of anthocyanin in lower leaves was low, and trado ascended, meanwhile the a*value was low, so lower leaves is not as good as upper leaves and middle leaves inornamental.2. In the three light conditions, the general trend change of A. palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ leafcolor showed that the color changed from yellow-green to dark green, along with the weakening of lightintensity. While reaction in the change of the pigment content in blade plasmids, the content ofchlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, the total chlorophyll and carotenoids lied in the lowest under full exposureprocessing. The relative content of anthocyanin reduced along with the shade degree improved. Increaseor decrease in various pigment content was for the plant adapting to the growth in shade and forprotecting the leaf from hurted. The change of soluble sugar content had some degree of correlationswith the shade degree size. At the same time, SOD, POD, soluble protein, MDA content and relativeplasma membrane permeability showed a certain change rule along with the shade stress processing, yet they had an unconspicuous relationship with anthocyanin and leaf color parameter. It means that the fiveindexes can’t conduct as evaluation factors that affect the leaf color performance, but reference index todecide the shade tolerance.Under the influence of the shade processing in summer, when light transmittance was50%, the leafcolor of A. palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ turned better. Combined with the timing change of the leaf color, lower leaves retained partial red for they might be protected by tree shelter, reflecting that theanthocyanin content and a*higher than upper leaves and middle leaves. Additionally, lower leaveskeeped fresh and intact, different from upper leaves which suffered partial wilting curl even broken. Itindicated that it’s inadvisable for A. palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ to survive under the direct sunlightin summer, so appropriate shade processing should be necessary in summer season to avoid the bladeburned by strong light.3. Landscape involved in A. palmatum varied in different seasons, rich seasonal changes. The trunkposture was natural and unrestrained, as same as moderate volume, for the more was its delicate textureblending with the surrounding environment. On account of its unique ornamental features, A. palmatumwas just like a gentle‘Small jasper’embellishing in Hangzhou garden--not excellent but distinctiveelegance. The plant configuration of A. palmatum could be solitary planting, coupled planting, flakeplanting or group planting. It could match with white wall, small bridges, stream or stone, also formingvaried level of plant space. Moreover, by used landscape construction method such as opposite scenery, adding scenery, enframed scenery and leaking scenery, A. palmatum would construct a Master-slavediscrimination void-solid combination landscape.
