The growth and development of feather depends largely on the growth anddevelopment of follicle. The regeneration and utilization of feather affects directly itsproduction and quality. Wanxi Goose, a famous goose bred in China, was taken as "one ofthe best gooses". Therefore, this paper discusses the pattern of growth and development ofits follicle in embryo period and the expression of critical regulating genes duringfeather-renewal period of Wanxi Goose. The results were of theoretical and practicalimportance by clarifying that feather of Wanxi Goose is economically valuable andmodulating the process of regeneration utilizing critical regulating genes.In the aspect of diameter of primary follicle during the embryo period, it wassignificantly wider in back (0.76μm) and waist (0.83μm) than in breast (0.65μm) andabdomen (0.66μm), while the primary follicle in the latter two grew faster and obviouslywider than that in back and waist3weeks after hatching. In terms of the density of primaryfollicle during the embryo period, it was significantly higher in breast (1.54per mm2) andabdomen (1.81per mm2) than in back and waist, while that in breast (0.82per mm2),abdomen (0.98per mm2) and back (1.17per mm2) were all significantly lower than that inwaist3weeks after hatching because of the growth of secondary follicle and cuticula. Onthe diameter of secondary follicle, the difference among different body parts mentionedabove was significant, however, it was markedly narrower in breast (0.57μm) than in otherparts mentioned above3weeks after hatching. It was the peak of secondary follicle growthfrom day27to day30of embryo period when the density of secondary follicle in breast(4.73per mm2) and in abdomen (4.84per mm2) were significantly higher than in back(6.37per mm2). The density of secondary follicle decreased continuously as pellicle grew,it was merely1.12per mm2in breast3weeks after hatching, however, still higher than thatin other parts mentioned above.There are three classes of genes are mainly related to the feather regenerationprocess,a class about fiber protein synthesis and accumulation, Such as ACTIN, α-Actinin,ATF-2, Filamin, etc. The other genes is associated with the amino acid anabolic,Such asPAH, LAO, GOT1; The third class of protein for the regulation of β-catenin pathway, suchas DEP1.
