BackgroundWith the rapid development of modern science and technology, our understanding of health has changed. We need to evaluate our healthy status comprehensively instead of physical health. However, the traditional biomedical indicators have been unable to meet these requirements. And we need more methods, with different angles. Meridian measurement method is based on the Meridian theory of traditional Chinese medicine. With the help of modern science and technology, we will reveal the relationship between meridians and clinical disease of traditional Chinese medicine. Little is known about the complex interplay of perennial allergic rhinitis, environmental and constitution factors. Therefore, this research selects perennial allergic rhinitis patients and healthy people as the testing target, applying DMS to measure these two groups, finally analyzing the meridian feature of the perennial allergic rhinitis patients and the interplay of perennial allergic rhinitis, environmental and constitution factors. With the development of technology and measurement equipment, the research of the related factors between perennial allergic rhinitis, meridian electric features and solar terms should be carried on, which can offer us another way to gain more insights into the disease. This study is going to provide data back-up to the research on objectification of traditional Chinese medicine.ObjectivesThrough observing the meridians index of perennial allergic rhinitis and healthy people during the four solar terms, initially explore the function of the meridian electrical perceptive measuring method in the field of the disease identification. By filling in the Wang Qi’s Constitution Scale, explore the constitution types of traditional Chinese medicine in perennial allergic rhinitis patients. And all of these are going to support the research on objectification traditional Chinese medicine.MethodsThe study used a cross sectional survey method, requiring people who met the inclusion criteria to sign the consent letter, fill in the personal health information form and Wang Qi’s Constitution Scale. According to the result of the questionnaire, this study divided subjects into perennial allergic rhinitis group of120cases (each solar tested30cases) and healthy people group of120cases (each solar tested30cases). The study detected two groups’ acupoints’index by using DMS to observe and compare the median, maximum, variance and occurrence rate of imbalance acupoints, etc., then analyze them by SPSS18.0, to find out the electrical differences between two groups during the four solar terms.Results1. On vernal equinox, the Yuan points index in the perennial allergic rhinitis group is higher than the healthy group except the left Yangchi point(SJ4). The difference is statistically significant (P<0.05).2. On winter solstice, the Yuan points index in the perennial allergic rhinitis group is higher than the healthy group except the Hegu point(LI4), Wangu point(SI4), Dal ing point(PC7) and Yangchi point(SJ4). The difference is statistically significant (P<0.05).3. Except the Taixi point (KI3), Qiuxu point (GB40) and left Daling point (PC7), there is significant difference in the Yuan points index between four solar terms (P<0.05).4. Except the left Hegu point (LI4) and Qiuxu point (GB40), there is significant difference in the Yuan points index between two groups (P<0.05).5. In the perennial allergic rhinitis group, there is significant difference between four solar terms in the index of Taibai point (SP3), Wangu point (SI4), Jinggu point (BL64) and Yangchi point (SJ4)(P<0.05).6. In the healthy people group, there is significant difference between four solar terms in the index of most Yuan points except left Chongyang(ST42), Taixi point (KI3) and Wangu point (SI4)(P<0.05).7. In the healthy people group, there is significant difference between the index of yin meridians and yang meridians (P<0.05). The meridian energy index of yang meridians is higher than yin’s in summer. In the perennial allergic rhinitis group, there is significant difference between the index of yin meridians and yang meridians (P<0.05). The meridian energy index of yin meridians is higher than yang’s in all four solar terms.8. The comparisons of two groups in meridian energy index and mental status index have statistically significant (P<0.05).9. There is significant difference in the degree index of Taichong(LR3) point between two groups (P<0.05).10. There is significant difference in the degree index of left Chongyang(ST42), left Taibai point (SP3), left Taixi point (KI3), Wangu point (SI4) and Yangchi point (SJ4) between four solar terms (P<0.05).11. There is significant difference between two groups in the occurrences of meridian imbalance of right Jinggu point(BL64), right Taixi point(KI3), and Taichong(LR3) point (P<0.05).12. Most of the constitutions of the perennial allergic rhinitis were Yang deficiency. In the healthy people group, there were40(33.33%) placidness constitution people,23(19.17%) yang deficiency constitution people and22(18.33%) qi deficiency constitution people. The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).As stated above, the median, maximum, variance and occurrence rate of imbalance acupoints of the two groups can differentiate the perennial allergic rhinitis group from the healthy group. And the statistics can show the interplay of perennial allergic rhinitis, environmental and constitution factors. It’s possible to use Digital Meridian System as an objective diagnosis tool to detect sub-healthy.ConclusionThis research selects perennial allergic rhinitis patients and healthy people as testing target, applying DMS to measure these two groups during four solar terms. The study suggests that there is significant difference in the meridian index for the two groups during spring and winter. The acupoint index of Taichong point shows abnormally high and the meridian acupoint of rhythm disappears in perennial allergic rhinitis patients. The Digital Meridian System can differentiate the two groups in electrical angel which indicates that the DMS could be a method to aid Traditional Chinese Medical identifications. And it’s worthwhile for future study and continuous research.
