In the thousands of years history of the struggle for human and diseases, the Chinese medicine has been used to preventing, diagnosing and treating disease by human, but it has many shortcomings include the Chronic efficacy, the inadequacies material basis and so on. In recent years, people synthesis a variety of chemical drugs constantly, although they have quick efficacy and the clear material basis, but there are also have many shortcomings such as the side effects. As a result, Chinese medicine as traditional medicine are now gradually arousing people’s interests. The modernization of Chinese medicine have been proposed in recent years. Its main task is studying the efficacy of specific substances in traditional Chinese medicine and the mechanism, which lay the foundation for the correct application of Chinese medicine.Incarvillea belongs to the angle artemisia and the bignoniaceae, which has many biological activity such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, anti-aging, cancer and anti-anemia and so on. Its main active ingredient is monoterpene alkaloid. To begin with, We extracted the incarvillea total alkaloids by ethanol and verified by the bismuth potassium iodide. In addition, we established animal models for the anti-inflammatory experiments:(1) xylene-induced mouse ear swelling showed that the xylene-induced mouse ear swelling was inhibited significantly by the incarvillea total alkaloids in the middle dose, (2) The carrageenan induced rat paw edema experiments indicated that the middle dose incarvillea total alkaloids could inhibit the rat paw edema which was induced by the carrageenan. Analgesic experiments:(1) Acetic acid-induced rat writhing test demonstrated that the total alkaloids significantly inhibited the acetic acid writhing, (2) The thermal stimulation mouse pain threshold experiments reveal that high-dose total alkaloids could increase the pain threshold of rat value. The incarvillea alkaloids have strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity in the four animal experiments. Therefore, we need the further studies for its active ingredients. At last, we purified the alkaloids Incarvillea by macroporous resin and the purity of 85.89% of the total alkaloids, and separated the total alkaloids by silica gel column. and obtained the major active ingredients such as incarvilline、delavavine A、incarvlline F and other alkaloids. We have studied the biological activity and chemical composition of Artemisia in the article, and provided the Artemisia’s rational use for clinical application. Meantime, the clinical pharmacological studies and chemical composition have been combined, which provide a reference for other Chinese medicines and promote the modernization for traditional Chinese medicine.
