Objective To study the change of body weight and glucose metabolism in pediatric patient with epilepsy under topiramate or sodium valproate treatment. Methods Two groups which are both including30pediatric patients with epilepsy were treated with topiramate or sodium valproate. The parameters of body weight, serum glucose, serum insulin, insulin resistance(IR), serum leptin, serum adiponectin and L/A were detected at pre-treatment3and6months following treatment carrying out self-control.Result Topiramate group:the levels of serum insulin, IR, serum leptin, L/A at3months following treatment were significantly lower than those of initial (P<0.01, respectively), but the body weight and the level of serum adiponectin had no significant change(P>0.05, respectively); the levels of serum insulin, IR, serum leptin, L/A at6months following treatment were significantly lower than those at3months following treatment (P<0.01, respectively), the body weight was significantly heavier than those of initial and pediatric patients treated for3months (P<0.05), but the serum adiponectin was higher (P<0.01). The fasting glucose levels had no significant change under topiramate treatment(P>0.05).Sodium valproate group:the levels of body weight, serum insulin, IR, serum leptin, L/A were significantly higher than those of initial (P<0.01, respectively), but the level of serum adiponectin was lower (P0.01); the levels of body weight, serum leptin, L/A at6months following treatment were significantly higher than those at3months following treatment(P<0.01, respectively), but the levels of serum adiponectin was lower(P<0.01), the level of serum insulin, IR were significantly lower than those of the initial and pediatric patients treated for3months (P<0.05, respectively); The fasting glucose levels had no significant change under sodium valproate treatment(P>0.05).Conclusion (1) The growth of pediatric patients with epilepsy was slower but not the body weight decreased under topiramate treatment.(2) The body weight of pediatric patients with epilepsy increased under sodium valproate treatment.(3) The glucose metabolism in pediatric patient with epilepsy maybe change under topiramate and sodium valproate treatment.(4) The fasting glucose levels had no significant change under topiramate and sodium valproate treatment...
